Summary

Let Them Eat Chaos, Kate Tempest's new long poem written for live performance and heard on the album release of the same name, is both a powerful sermon and a moving play for voices。 Seven neighbors inhabit the same London street, but are all unknown to each other。 The clock freezes in the small hours, and one by one we see directly into their lives: lives that are damaged, disenfranchised, lonely, broken, addicted, and all, apparently, without hope。 Then a great storm breaks over London, and brings them out into the night to face each other--and their own last chance to connect。

Tempest argues that our alienation from one another has bred a terrible indifference to our own fate, but she counters this with a plea to challenge the forces of greed which have conspired to divide us, and mend the broken home of our own planet while we still have time。 Let Them Eat Chaos is a cri de cœur and a call to action, and, both on the page and in Tempest's electric performance, one of the most powerful poetic statements of the year。

This is an absolute work of art! Finished in one sitting, beautifully written and ahead of their time。 Really worth looking up their spoken tracks on YouTube too。 Tempest has true talent

Kae is the genius londoner that really knows how to scare others: making the pint go up 2 quid

not the type of poetry i was expecting! it was more like a short story that was told through a series of poems, i enjoyed it : )

I’ve been aware of Kae Tempest for a few years - probably since around the time Let Them Eat Chaos came out, if not a little earlier。 I received this book as a present from a friend of mine, who writes beautiful poetry, so I knew to trust them on this。 As a lifelong Londoner, I enjoyed this poem as it’s kind of a love letter to the city。 Of course, as it should be, it’s also deeply critical of the gentrification London continues to undergo, which disenfranchises people more and more every day。 I I’ve been aware of Kae Tempest for a few years - probably since around the time Let Them Eat Chaos came out, if not a little earlier。 I received this book as a present from a friend of mine, who writes beautiful poetry, so I knew to trust them on this。 As a lifelong Londoner, I enjoyed this poem as it’s kind of a love letter to the city。 Of course, as it should be, it’s also deeply critical of the gentrification London continues to undergo, which disenfranchises people more and more every day。 It forces you to confront the horrors of climate change, too, if only while reading it。 The hope with this work is that people will change the way they see London, our country and the world, or at least realise that they should - and it serves as a grim reminder not just of the direction in which the world’s climate is going, but also of the blood on the hands of the UK, as it continues to participate in wars across the world。 This poem was written to be read aloud, and you can tell - but not in a bad way。 Tempest writes in a manner that allowed me as a reader to almost picture them performing it; I was able to settle into the rhythm of the work almost instantly。All in all, a great way to spend an hour that will hopefully get you thinking about the state of our world for many more。 。。。more

This full-length narrative poem weaves in and out of the homes of seven people who all live on the same street in London, as they lie awake at 4am。 They are strangers to each other, but through a series of snapshots into their lives, Tempest captures the universal anxieties of modern life, despite their different circumstances。It’s remarkable how much Tempest can convey with few words, giving us a clear sense of each person and the struggles of their daily lives, while commenting on the wider so This full-length narrative poem weaves in and out of the homes of seven people who all live on the same street in London, as they lie awake at 4am。 They are strangers to each other, but through a series of snapshots into their lives, Tempest captures the universal anxieties of modern life, despite their different circumstances。It’s remarkable how much Tempest can convey with few words, giving us a clear sense of each person and the struggles of their daily lives, while commenting on the wider societal problems of wealth disparity, disenfranchisement, and an increased sense of disconnection from the world around us – a theme that resonates particularly strongly in the current climate。It’s hard to describe why I loved this so much, and to pull random extracts from it would do no justice to its cumulative power。 Suffice to say it is beautifully observed, articulating with gut-punch wisdom so much of where we’re going wrong; in how we treat ourselves, in how we treat each other, and in how we treat the planet。 But for all its pathos, it is also an impassioned and hopeful call for kindness and connection。 。。。more

Holy fucking shit。 I have no words。 You HAVE to listen to this。 It's hip hop but poetry and visual and OMG。 The whole album is on Youtube。 This poem is an audio-visual experience that talks about everyhing young people are angry about, our fears, the pressing threat of climate change, and much more I'm sure I'll get on future re-reads。 Holy fucking shit。 I have no words。 You HAVE to listen to this。 It's hip hop but poetry and visual and OMG。 The whole album is on Youtube。 This poem is an audio-visual experience that talks about everyhing young people are angry about, our fears, the pressing threat of climate change, and much more I'm sure I'll get on future re-reads。 。。。more

The only thing that could be better than reading Kate Tempest poetry, would be them reading it to me, while in my living room with my stretchy pants and wooly socks on。 Which you can find on Youtube。 Do it。 They are wise beyond their years with unbelievable insight and an unsurpassed talent for the written word。 I will read this one again and again。

Without a performance to back it up, this is a weak poem。 It tries to say a lot but never gets it right。 Tempest relies too much on cliched observations to get their point across。 It's inauthentic and miserable without any catharsis。 Without a performance to back it up, this is a weak poem。 It tries to say a lot but never gets it right。 Tempest relies too much on cliched observations to get their point across。 It's inauthentic and miserable without any catharsis。 。。。more

It took me a while to figure out who was speaking at first, then I realized the narrative dips in and out of different minds。 I didn't enjoy Let Them Eat Chaos as much as Brand New Ancients, but it's still a superb narrative poem。 I had to concentrate a lot harder and focus, so as not to lose track of who's speaking。 Kae repeats certain words, such as 'picture the world' and the time is constantly accentuated, to show the poem is one moment, the moment of 4。18 and everything happens within this It took me a while to figure out who was speaking at first, then I realized the narrative dips in and out of different minds。 I didn't enjoy Let Them Eat Chaos as much as Brand New Ancients, but it's still a superb narrative poem。 I had to concentrate a lot harder and focus, so as not to lose track of who's speaking。 Kae repeats certain words, such as 'picture the world' and the time is constantly accentuated, to show the poem is one moment, the moment of 4。18 and everything happens within this moment, simultaneously。 The poem takes place in London, 'in the blurring of the world beyond the curtain' (5) and 'it's 4。18 am' when 'seven different people in seven different flats are wide awake。' (7)。 The narrator introduces each character one-by-one giving a theatrical effect, and it's this scriptwriting element that enables a steady bounce between character's thoughts。 Jemma, Esther, Alicia, Pete, Bradley, Zoe, and Pious are all so unique and incredible; that's what I love about Kae Tempest's writing, the fact they spend time to get to know their characters and as a result, real people are represented and all who read Tempest's work will be given a glimpse into working-class lives。 Let Them Eat Chaos not only shows the working-class but those who changed their class status through hard work, commitment, and dedication。 A storm is brewing, seven people are awake to witness it and in the end, they all step outside at the same time to see it。 Kae Tempest does what many would like to see happen, they unite people from different socio-economic backgrounds, through the power of a storm。 Tempest writes, 'seven doors to seven flats open at the same time and light the raining pavement' (64) because none of us are that different after all; people just need to truly see each other, the way 'they see each other' (65) for the first time。 Tempest writes, 'the sickness of the culture and the sickness in our hearts is a sickness that's inflicted by the distance that we share。' (71)。 I think Tempest says it all, a problem with UK society is the distance between people, and it's the divide between socio-economic class and cultures that causes the distance。 Let Tempest unite us。 。。。more

I read this without initially knowing that it was written by a rapper? Now it kinda makes sense since I was totally envisioning Eminem rapping while I was reading it lol。 Anyway, powerful stuff。 Real and very raw。
